Beaches of Kaua'I and Ni'Ihau (A Kolowalu Book)
Published in Paperback by University of Hawaii Press (April, 1990)
Author: John R.K. Clark
Average review score:

Superb
Thus book was a labor of love. With years of experience as a lifeguard and surfer, John's curiousity went beyond. He studied oceanography, read all he could, and interviewed all those who knew anything about each beach. The result is the best source of information that will ever be available about Hawaiian beaches.

In depth info on practically every beach on Maui
I used this book when doing research for a web site during our one year stay on Maui. It's awesome! The in-depth info on every beach on the island is up-to-date and insightful, with tid-bits of info only locals know, including history, geography, what's offshore, and more!

magnificent
Being from Hawaii, I found this book to be very true and accurate. It helped me experience beaches I didn't even know about.

Before it Hits Home.
Published in Paperback by Dramatist's Play Service (January, 1998)
Author: Cheryl L. West
Average review score:

What a surprise
Playwrights have a short time frame to present a story that is entertaining and, if the reader/vierwer is lucky, inspiring. Cheryl West uses her time wisely. This play is staged well, the characters are realistic, and the reactions of her characters are a bit unexpected. What a pleasure.

Before It Hits Home
I'm a Senior at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and we performed this play last fall. If you are looking for a moving piece that is thought provoking, insightful and a tear-jerker...this is it! I played Wendal, the young man who gets AIDS. One of the things I liked about this play was that no matter what character you chose to study, the play justified their actions and reactions.. Also as the author said, it takes a long hard look at a situation that "isn't supposed to happen" in the black community. Cheryl West, thank you for giving us this opportunity to educate and inform....

Belize : Land of the Free by the Carib Sea
Published in Hardcover by Bowen & Bowen, Ltd. (10 October, 2000)
Author: Thor Janson
Average review score:

THIS IS THE BEST BOOK ON THE JEWEL OF THE CARIBBEAN
BELIZE: LAND OF THE FREE BY THE CARIB SEA by Thor Janson is without question one of the most beautiful photographic books I own. I have not visited Belize yet but as I look at the stunning images in Janson's book It has me dreaming of a mid-winter get away to this little country flanked by the Caribbean Sea. The book includes an excellent introductory text which takes the reader all the way from pre-historic times up to the present day and describes in detail all the different cultural groups which make up the rich fabric of contemporary Belezian society. The bulk of the book is comprised of photo layouts including extraordinary shots of wild animals such as jaguars and manatees, ancient Mayan ruins, cultural events (such as the wild Belize City carnaval), peaceful rural scenes, beautiful children, rainforests, savannahs, and pine forests, and plenty of charming, happy, smiling faces giving the impression that Belize must be a very warm, inviting place to visit, indeed. A picture is worth a thousand words, they say, and this excellent book by Thor Janson contains more than 150 extraordinary photos which combined give the reader a real "feel" of what life is like in the diminutive, peaceful nation of Belize.

Belize: Land of the Free by the Carib Sea
A few months ago I visited Belize with my mom and we had a super great time. It is the most beautiful rainforest and the ocean reef is one of the biggest in the world. The book Belize shows all the natural beauty of the country as well as the many cultural groups including Mayan Indians, Creole, and Garifuna people which is a new culture formed of the mixture of African and American Indian people. The book Belize is full of beautiful color photographs and really gives you a good idea of what the country is like.

Beneath the Rim: A Photographic Journey Through the Grand Canyon
Published in Hardcover by Louisiana State University Press (July, 1996)
Author: C. C. Lockwood
Average review score:

Spectacular presentation of the inner Canyon
C.C. Lockwood has done a remarkable presentation of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. It is obvious from the pictures and text presented that he is extremely knowledgable of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. There are views of the inner Canyon that have never before been published and his intimate portrayal of river running on some of the largest white water in North America exemplifies his professionalism as a photographer. For Canyon lovers and river runners alike, both past and future, I highly recommend Mr. Lockwood's achievement.

A MUST for all Grand Canyon enthusiasts!
A beautiful glimpse into the heart of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. The photographs in this book have captured some of the magic that can only be found in the depths of the canyon. I have done two dory trips through the Grand Canyon and I can say that this book is the next best thing to actually being there.

Bengali Women
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (October, 1992)
Author: Manisha Roy
Average review score:

Fascinating
This book provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of traditional (upper-middle class) Bengali women and their families. Roy presents a thorough analysis of the dynamics of extended family life in West Bengal. She begins with an exploration of the special bonds that develop between father and daughter, then moves on to how schooling and classic literature play a role in developing a young woman's idyllic view of married life. Later she contrasts that ideal with the reality of being a stranger competing with one's mother-in-law for the attentions of one's husband, and how this is tempered with the birth of children, especially sons. Finally, she discusses middle age and the later years, when the children have grown and women seek companionship from their sons or religious personages. In some respects, the dynamics that Roy describes here are probably generally found in any culture with a strong tradition of patrilineal extended families. Other aspects of life, particularly religious life, are more unique to Hindu and Bengali culture. The book was originally written some 30 years ago, and certainly there have been many changes in Bengali culture during this time. But even as a window into Bengali family life of the recent past, it a very interesting and well written study.

An in-depth study of Bengali Women's Daily Lives
A Wonderful book that details a Bengali (India) woman's life from birth to death. An enjoyable and informative read. By interviewing many Bengali women, the author gave amazing detail into what it is like to be a woman in Calcutta, by illuminating the subject's feelings, experiences, rituals and secrets. Manisha Roy also offers an update in the back of the book that chronicals the many changes that have happened since she first published the book some twenty years ago. The book gives a timeless glimpse into the private world of Bengali women. Subject range: Sociology/Women's Studies/Anthropology/Indian Cultural Studies, some photos. Highly reccomended!

Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin
Published in Paperback by Bradford Press (December, 2000)
Authors: Marguerite Henry and Wesley Dennis
Average review score:

A Wonderful Children's Biography
Marguerite Henry has a wonderful style of writing that keeps children's attention as they read. This is an excellent biography of a famous artist, and one that any child or adult would truly enjoy (whether or not they were interested in art). Where else can you learn of the ingenuity of a young boy, willing to use hair from his cat's tail to make his own paint brushes. I have read the majority of the books written by Marguerite Henry, and would highly recommend this one as one of her best.

Delightful children's biography
The biography of Benjamin West is a treat for any young person. The author's presentation of Quaker life is informative and accurate, and her style encourages the reader to keep reading. Benjamin West's childhood is well represented as he works, plays, and grows up in colonial America. His strength of character is revealed as he struggles with his desire to paint and draw while living in a culture that views pictures as frivolous and unnecessary. I have read this book with elementary students several times and they are always delighted with the story and learn a great deal about this American artist. Anyone who loves Marguerite Henry's horse stories will enjoy this biography as well.

Best Bike Rides in the Pacific Northwest, 2nd
Published in Paperback by Globe Pequot Pr (March, 1996)
Authors: Todd Litman and Suzanne Kort
Average review score:

Very good ride planning guide
While there are several multi-day trips in the guide, this book is targeted at the more serious recreational rider who is looking for day rides of 25 to 60 miles. It covers quite a large area, mostly in Washington State, with general and detailed descriptions of the routes, augmented by line maps. One nice feature is that it details the vertical profile of each ride so you can see what you're getting into when it comes to climbing hills at various milage points in the rides.

I've ridden about 1/3 of the routes and have found the rides well planned and accurately described. There is always a place to stop for a break near mid-way, and often alternatives to shorten or lengthen the trip. A great book to get you in touch with quiet roads or bike trails that you otherwise may never discover.

Identifies great week long bicycle tours in the Northwest
Good reference of some of the favorite multi-day bicycle tours in the Northwest.

Best Dressed Southern Salads: 101 Sumptuous Southern Salads from Key West to Washington, Dc
Published in Paperback by Capital Books Inc (09 December, 2002)
Author: Vicky Moon
Average review score:

--Enjoyable--
Vicky Moon has assembled a nice assortment of Southern salad recipes that take the reader up the eastern coast, from the Florida Keys to Northern Virginia and Washington, D. C. She calls it "Margaritaville to Egoville." The book is witty with bits of humor and antidotes about her travels.

BEST DRESSED SOUTHERN SALADS has a catchy title and the small, but compact book is filled with some luscious sounding recipes. I like the small size of the book, because you can easily take it with you to the grocery store when you shop for the dressing and salad ingredients.

I tried several of her salads and enjoyed them. I'm looking forward to trying more recipes as we get into the summer months when our produce is at its peak.

Lovely Cookbook with Juicy Stories!
This lovely, little cookbook combines recipes and fun, inside-the-loop stories about prominant Southern figures. I thoroughly enjoyed Vicky Moon's book "Middleburg Mystique," and I'm glad this book is just as good.

Best Easy Day Hikes Orange County (FalconGuide)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (March, 2000)
Author: Randy Vogel
Average review score:

Nice Maps and Trail Descriptions
I have taken many of the trails listed in this book and was impressed with the accurate trail maps which include mileage markers, geologic features, and elevations of mountain peaks. Trail descriptions include the distance, estimated time required, start and end elevations, and technical ratings. The book is useful for both mountain bikers and hikers. About fifty pages are devoted solely to trails in the Santa Ana Mountains. Unfortunately, recent development has eliminated some of the trailheads, especially in Aliso & Wood Canyons Park.

Perfect referance book to plan your next ride
I love the book, and refer to it every weekend
